Opulent Tastes Runway: M/FW25 at il Mercato Centrale

Fashion has a way of moving through a city—like the low hum of anticipation on Collins Street, the swish of a coat through a laneway, the sparkle of sequins catching late-afternoon light. This spring, that feeling has a flavour. il Mercato Centale Melbourne is proud to be the Official Partner of Melbourne Fashion Week’s Dining Runway, bringing the world of style to the table—literally.

Where fabric tells a story, food does too. Our three-level marketplace of 23 artisans is where recipes are cut and sewn the way garments are—by hand, with heritage, and with a flair that’s unmistakably Italian. From La Pasta Fresca’s silky tagliatelle to La Pizza Napoletana’s blistered crusts and the perfect crema on your espresso, every bite is crafted with the same precision and passion you’ll see on the runway.

A Night Where Style and Flavour Walked Hand-in-Hand

On Tuesday, October 21st, il Mercato Centrale Melbourne transformed into a catwalk of creativity for the Opulent Tastes Runway, one of the most anticipated events of Melbourne Fashion Week 2025. This was no ordinary runway; it was an immersive celebration where haute couture and Italian gastronomy fused to create a sensory journey unlike any other.

Setting the Scene: The Heart of Melbourne’s Newest Food Hub

Guests arrived at the iconic Collins Street venue, greeted by the hum of anticipation and the sparkle of city lights. The air was tinged with the aroma of fresh oysters and the gentle clink of glasses, as complimentary drinks and ocean-fresh molluscs welcomed everyone to a night of luxury and refinement.

The Runway: Australia’s Leading Designers Take Centre Stage

The runway itself was a showcase of Australia’s finest, including Atoir, Clair Helen, Clea, Gary Bigeni, Godwin Charli, Lovaan, Ngali, Perple, and Saint Stella M. Each label brought its own interpretation of elegance, innovation, and individuality, with collections that celebrated both structure and fluidity—mirroring the diversity and artistry of Italian cuisine.

A Feast for the Senses: The Menu as Art

As models glided between tables, guests embarked on a culinary adventure crafted by il Mercato Centrale’s artisan chefs:
  • Entrée: Chef Jerry Kim (il Ristorante) delighted the crowd with insalata caprese, vitello tonnato, and golden cauliflower arancini, each dish a tribute to Italian tradition and local produce.
  • Intermission: The break between runway halves became a gourmet parade: cotoletta from Lo Smashburger (Tim Jordan & Nathan Zammit), mini pizze margherite from La Pizza Napoletana (Giovanni Carbone), lasagna ricotta e spinaci from Le Lasagne (Alessio Davidde), and a warming bowl of risotto milanese from Il Riso (Simone Garusi).
  • Finale: As the last looks swept the runway, guests were gifted a sweet finish—mini vanilla gelato cones dipped in chocolate from Il Gelato (Rovena Xeba) and a striking mini sourdough loaf with activated charcoal by Chef Jerry Kim, perfect for the journey home.

The Fusion: Where Fashion Inspires Flavour

The true magic of Opulent Tastes was in its seamless blend of two worlds. As Broadsheet captured, “Inside Il Mercato Centrale, nine designers presented new collections in a show aptly titled Opulent Tastes… while guests grazed on tasting plates. As the extremely online would put it, they ate.”
This event was more than a dinner or a show—it was a living tableau, where the textures of fabric and the flavours of Italy danced together. Plates and garments alike became canvases for storytelling, artistry, and shared experience.

A Lasting Impression

For one night only, il Mercato Centrale became the beating heart of Melbourne’s creative scene where food and fashion proved they are kindred spirits, each elevating the other. As guests departed with gifts in hand and inspiration in their hearts, the message was clear: when worlds collide at the table and on the runway, something truly opulent is born.
